How to Establish Credit
Even if You Now Have Bad Credit
Everyone needs to establish credit. Establishing a credit history is an important part of convincing credit providers that you are a worthy risk for additional credit.
You need to establish credit to get a car loan, buy a home, and sometimes to get a good job.
How do you begin to establish credit? You can establish credit by doing any of the following:
- Apply for a secured or prepaid credit card. It requires that you open and maintain a bank account or other asset account at a financial institution as security for your line of credit. Your credit line will be a percentage of your deposit, typically from 50 to 100 percent. Application and processing fees are not uncommon for secured credit cards. In addition, secured credit cards usually carry higher interest rates than traditional nonsecured cards. But, you can establish credit by making timely payments.
- Borrow using your bank account as collateral. If you have some money in a bank, you can establish credit by borrowing a small amount from the bank and using your deposit as collateral. Simply make all the payments on your loan on time. This will cost you some interest on the loan, but in a few months you will establish credit that is adequate to get credit cards or other loans.
- Ask someone with an established credit history to co-sign a loan. You can some a friend or relative to co-sign a loan to establish credit. The co-signer promises to pay your debts if you don’t. You'll want to repay any debt promptly so you can establish credit and apply for credit in the future on your own.
It may take a while to establish credit. But, once your credit report shows timely payments on small debts, credit providers will trust you to repay larger debts.
