Personal budgeting is not something most people leaned in school. You probably don't have practice making up a financial plan.
A personal budget is a money plan. Think of your family as a business.
Every successful company has a budget. It's a plan involving income and expenses.
To be financially successful, you need one too.
A personal budget helps organize your money to achieve financial goals. It helps control your financial resources. Your personal budget will show how your money will be used for your benefit. A personal budget is really simple but powerful.
Step 1: Where Am I?
The first step to establish a personal budget is to see exactly where you are financially. How much money is coming in to your family? How much is your family spending?
Make a list of all your income. This part of your personal budget is usually pretty easy. Look at all the checks you receive. Include all your pay checks, government checks, and include tips and other sources of income.
Now, make a list of all the ways you spend money or use credit to buy things. Your personal budget will mostly affect your spending habits. This step is important.
To start out, here are some categories you can use to organize your current spending:

Where Your Money Goes
To create a personal budget, start with several sheets of paper. Use a separate sheet of paper to record your spending for each category below.
- Mortgage or Rent
- Electric, gas, telephone utility bills
- Gasoline or bus fares
- Auto repair expenses
- Parking fees
- Restaurant or fast food expenses
- Store bought food, groceries, soap
- Clothing
- Entertainment, movies, gambling
- Taxes
- Credit card or other loan payments (not including mortgage payments)
- Savings, 401k, IRA
- Other miscellaneous expenses

It can take a while to remember all your spending. To create the best personal budget you should be as accurate as possible.
Record every expense for a month. This will help you keep track of your expenses.
And, just as important, it will make you think about all the ways you spent money during the month. Thinking about your current spending will help you create a personal budget for future spending.
